Belmont

Th
is transmitter is sited on the Lincolnshire Wolds and serves most of the County plus parts of Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and North Norfolk. It carries TV, VHF and Digital radio.

It is an impressive tower and unusually has a bluish tinge on the metal structure. As with all main transmitters there are a number of satellite dishes on the site mainly to receive the Channel 5 signal.

The station carried the old 405 line/ VHF services up to the mid 80's and in this case both BBC 1 and ITV were transmitted in Band 111 on channels 7 and 13. I remember these services starting when I was growing up in Spalding in South Lincolnshire. Belmont was one of the main transmitters for the area along with Waltham.

This transmitter has carried a commercial radio station since January 6th 1997. It is a large mast and pleasantly does not carry any mobile phone aerials. The aerials for Capital FM are presumably the two about a quarter of the way down the mast. The site has rather impressive security fencing and gates presumably because it stands in a rather isolated position overlooking the city of Leicester. There is also a rather large transmitter building. I wonder why?
